Let’s get started with our first (and timely) question regarding homeschool evaluations.

Q: What happens if we don’t submit our annual evaluations on time?

A: Let’s first define “on time”. The FAQs at the Florida Department of Education are surprisingly helpful: http://www.floridaschoolchoice.org/information/home_education/FAQs.asp#Evaluation

It states:
“Annually” is defined in Florida Statute as one year from the date of the letter of intent. A district may not enact a policy that would require an alternate deadline. However, some home educators may choose to follow a district’s requested deadline in order to align with the traditional school calendar.

Next, what is the consequence if an evaluation is not turned in on time?
Section 1002.41, F.S., requires the parent to provide for an annual evaluation of the home education student and to file a copy of the evaluation annually with the district school superintendent’s office in the county in which the student resides. Failure to comply with this requirement may trigger the district’s policy regarding non-compliance with compulsory school attendance.

Translated, that means that your child could be considered truant if you don’t file an annual evaluation.
Life can present challenges. While you should plan and structure your year to complete this requirement in a timely fashion, in the event of a family emergency or other event, we would be happy to assist in communicating with your superintendent’s office, should such a need arise.

Alternatively, parents may enroll their children in a Florida private school corporation, which alleviates the need to be accountable to the superintendent by way of an annual evaluation.

When [...]]]> It’s that time of year again! The 2011 FPEA Homeschool Convention at the Gaylord Palms resort in Orlando will be held May 26-29 at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando. If you register by May 1st you will receive an “early bird” discount. The going rate is $45 for FPEA members and $85 for non-members.
