A woman I knew in a writing class I took not too long ago was reminiscing about her recently deceased mother. She said one of her fondest memories of her mom were that she always had time for one more story, even if they would be late for an appointment or had other things to do, her mother never said no to more reading. That touched me so much and I will never forget it. I want to be that kind of mom too!

I love reading to my children, I think it is the best thing about homeschooling. I also enjoy listening to a story in the car together, in fact, if I could read all day, I would.

We love C.S. Lewis! NO, reading aloud books that are above a child's independent reading level is not detrimental. :)

I love this post and I also love reading aloud to our boys!! I agree with the fact that some of our most cherished moments are during this time! : ) Although, I have to confess...We are currently reading Chronicles of Narnia with is above their reading level!! Is this detrimental to them??? I'm also happy to know there are so many more benefits to reading aloud than the obvious! : ) THANKS!!

I knew that you would still be reading aloud to your middle school girls (and younger kiddos) because I know you have a deep appreciation for good literature. How can you NOT read it aloud!

I still read to Jane and Kate ( and of course to Anthony and Maggie). Many of the books the older girls have to read for school they read on their own, but typically, I pick one book a month that I read aloud. Before school ended this year we read The Scarlet Letter aloud. This book is actually hard to read on your own and I think if they did so they would have lost interest, but reading aloud was fun for them. I love reading aloud to all of them. I find it relaxes all of us. And I never knew it had so many more benefits beyond that.

I have a twelve year old who is ahead in certain subjects and there may come a time when she advances in grade beyond where she would normally be placed if she were attending a public school. Do I need to prove that she is high school ready before her chronological age, or can I place her in high school level studies earlier than that?

If so, can I still do this even though she is enrolled under AIE, an umbrella school and is technically considered a private schooled student?
